Operational Technology (OT) cybersecurity focuses on protecting the systems that control and operate physical building functions—such as HVAC, Building Automation Systems (BAS), access control, lighting, and other connected infrastructure. This session will begin by clearly defining what OT cybersecurity is—and what it isn’t, and how it differs from traditional IT security.
Attendees will explore real-world building system risks, including examples of cybersecurity incidents that have impacted HVAC, BAS, access control, and other OT environments. These examples will show what a cyber event actually looks like in day-to-day operations—disruptions to comfort, access, safety, and building performance.
The presentation will then examine how attackers reach building systems, highlighting common access pathways, misconfigurations, and vulnerabilities that are frequently overlooked in commercial properties.
Finally, the session will focus on what protection looks like in practice, covering practical cyber hygiene, monitoring, and risk-reduction strategies that organizations can realistically implement to reduce exposure and improve resilience—without requiring deep cybersecurity expertise.
